Hello and welcome to my website
My latest novel, “In Her Mothers’ Shoes” wasn’t commercial enough for publication by my publisher Random House (which seems to be an increasing problem for authors worldwide) so I have published it myself on Amazon. It is now available as an e-book in the Amazon Kindle store and as a printed paperback through Amazon books. It’s been quite a journey getting to this point, and I'm delighted to have it in the public domain at last. You can buy "In her Mothers' Shoes" at Amazon You may also like to read my Blog.
I wrote the novel – about the adoption triangle, mother-daughter relationships and the quest to belong – when I was at Victoria University’s Institute of Modern Letters creative writing MA course (popularly known as the Manhire course) in 2011 and graduated in 2012. It’s not as commercial as my previous two Penny Rushmore books, but I promise you it’s just as good a read and just as absorbing.
It tells the story of three women caught in the adoption triangle – two mothers and their daughter – who are about to discover the emotional turmoil of confronting their past when the daughter, Kate Stewart, traces her birth mother and finds she has a brother and sister who never knew she existed. And yes, it’s based on three true stories, one of them mine.
I’m proud of “In Her Mothers’ Shoes” – it’s the best writing I’ve done yet – and I hope you enjoy it. I seem to be attracted to semi-autobiographical subjects. Penny Rushmore was a little like me too, sandwiched between a career, teenagers and elderly parents all making demands on your time and emotions. Penny’s best-selling trilogy of novels – “Head over Heels”, “A Sandwich Short of a Picnic” and “Split Time” – are also available from the Amazon and Kindle stores
I’ve also written the best-selling biography Dare to Dream – the John Britten Story, a couple of corporate histories (Lane Walker Rudkin, celebrating its centennial, and the Canterbury Employers’ Chamber of Commerce to commemorate its 150th).
I hope you enjoy browsing this website and finding out more about my books and my other writing, including an article about the trials and tribulations of getting published. Have a good read!
